The Turas 2008

The Turas is Ireland's first World Series Expedition Adventure Race. 80 Athletes will compete in mixed sex teams of 4 over a period of 6 days from June 16th-21st.

Just for starters, the prologue is an 8 hour event taking us over the summit of Mount Brandon on the Dingle peninsula.

This is followed by the non-stop race starting on Tuesday 17th with what looks to be an epic sea kayak out from Schull. From then on we'll visit all the other peninsulas in the South West of Ireland in a course of around 650km culminating with a hike over Ireland's highest peaks before finishing at the Gap of Dunloe for a midsummer festival.

During that time we'll be sea kayaking, mountain biking, mountain hiking, swimming, rowing and doing rope activities. The clock never stops so sleep is kept to a minimum in order to do well.

CamRacers Team
Ideally for a race like this we would all have spent months doing almost nothing else, training together and really getting to know each other. In reality we all have our own lives. For Maria, Tarquin and Tim this will be their first expedition length adventure race and due to late replacement, none of us will have met Tim until we register in Dingle. Although Tim and Russ are both in the same Sleepmonsters/Inov-8 squad. We all bring our own qualities and experience to the team in different ways. We just hope that Tarquin's recent 20m freediving skills won't be needed.

We're looking forward to seeing the best that the South-West of Ireland has to offer, whilst surprising ourselves at what we are capable of. No doubt we'll make new friends along the journey. One thing's for sure, we'll all know each other and ourselves a little better by the end of the week.

Follow us in The Race
You can visit the race website, check the leaderboard, look at sleepmonsters web reports and follow progress on the course by downloading google earth if you don't already have it.

Russ
Grew up in orienteering, hiking and mountaineering then moved to longer orienteering events and mountain marathons. Won his first 5 hour AR event with Jeff. Often lead navigator on the MTB and kayak sections and can't seem to help making pre-race packing lists. Loves knowing that eating just about anything in a long race is good for you!
Tim
A former Triathlete, and holder of 5 national medals for distances up to Ironman. 5 Time Triathlon World championship competitor for Great Britain. Made the switch to Adventure Racing in 2003 when looking for the next big challenge. Spends up to 30hrs per week training, with the aim of becoming the UK's first Professional Adventure Racer. Fills his spare time by drinking strong coffee, teaching children to swim and chasing hot young mums!
Tarquin
Tarquin is an adventure journalist who joined Russ in the London Rat Race and IGWA, during which they managed to sail a windsurfer backwards. In 2007 he was 2nd in the 3 Peaks Yacht Race as a runner. He's also run the Marathon des Sables, and made an unguided winter ascent of New Zealand's Mt Cook. He can hold his breath for 4 minutes!
Maria
Maria is a highly driven adventure athlete with a passion for climbing, sailing and pushing herself to the limit. Third in the 2007 3 Peaks Yacht Race, 6th female in the Thames Ultra 50 miler of 2006 and has run the Marathon des Sables, where she was 12th female on marathon day. London based, she is half-Swedish and drives a BMW.

A Special Thanks to...
All of our friends and family and everyone that has helped us take part in this race and gather all the kit required. It's amazing how many people are willing to lend out their kayaks, climbing gear, paddles, boxes . Thanks everyone!.
